What Is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine. Fine needles are inserted at specific sites in the body for therapeutic and preventative purposes. (NHS)

Western medical acupuncture is a method used by most physios.

The NICE guidelines currently recommend its use for pain & migraines but this varies depending on who sits on the review panel.

We may suggest the inclusion of acupuncture as part of an integrated approach to the management of pain & inflammation or depression by stimulating the body’s own healing processes. It is thought to do tis by helping the different bodily system to work in harmony. (Association of Acupuncture Chartered Physiotherapist).

Liz also uses acupuncture to treat stress and mild depression, often related to neck and/or headaches, plus to help with the symptoms of menopause in ladies, and men having hormone therapy for prostrate cancer.

What To Expect

What to expect.... We will discuss your issues, select appropriate acupuncture points.

You will be positioned in a comfortable position on a bed or chair so you are able to relax.

The needles will be inserted then turned to stimulate a sensation, sharp ache or tingle.

You will then rest for 15 to 30 minutes. We may stimulate (turn) the needles again in this time depending on the aims of the treatment.

The needles are removed, we will check you feel fine before you leave clinic.
